12-14 October (yes I know we haven’t stayed that long yet, but we will)

Weather: cloud, rain overnight, then sunny and bright but with that autumn chill

The snow melted, the roads dried and it was time to move on again.  The snow remained on the high slopes.  B has been pining for a ski holiday ever since we entered the Dolomites and he spotted ski lifts everywhere, of course the sight of snow on the runs has exacerbated the feeling to the point that I have had to promise to look at the possibility this winter.

So we made tracks for a cluster of ACSI campsites close to my meeting scheduled for Monday.  These are sites which offer a specific price during the low season, as defined in an annual guide which you purchase to qualify.  It’s a good scheme as we have found that many in the mountain areas are still on high season pricing.  The only problem is that there are some inconvenient gaps in coverage.

The route was again very scenic as we skirted the northern hills of the Alpine region, moving from Bavaria to Baden-Wurttemburg. We diverted slightly to Tettnang, to the local brewery/restaurant recommended by my Munich client.  It was nice, though not outstanding.  The Pils beer was excellent and there were rather unusual light fittings featuring carved representations of the local trades, with more on the walls.

So far the best German/Austrian food was our lunch with my Munich client, in her local cinema (venison goulasch and wiener schnitzel), with the roast pork of the Viktualenmarkt a close second.

In Orsingen we found a suitable campsite – new and so very little tree cover so now we are making the most of some autumn sun.   This campsite’s quirk is an alternative take on the “camping barrel” we have seen in several others.  That is a wooden cylinder lying on its side, just large enough for 2 sleeping benches with a walkway between.  An interesting alternative to bringing your own tent.  Here they are buried into the hillside so it looks like Hobbitsville! (or Hobbitenstadt).
