On the train to London less than a week after reacquainting ourselves with our stationary home as opposed to the ever moving Horatio.

Lucky for us we have lovely countryside views from our windows and a new big bed to relish in compensation for staying put for a while. Actually this time I really did want to go home. I am not sure why, my wanderlust remains, but it was a tiring trip and once you are no longer able to sit outside it becomes harder to relax between meetings. Mind you, we did nearly finish all 6 series of the boxed set of Foyle’s War during the 2 trips this year, which always becomes poignant as you come back up through Northern France and see all the signs for the war museums and cemeteries. B wants to stop there sometime and visit a lot of these, I am less enthusiastic, not through lack of respect but purely as I find war in all its forms very distressing. Still, I appreciate the need to remember and we did find a perfect site from which to do this, so I think it will be on the itinerary on one of our future trips. Of course next year is the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War – the “war to end all wars”. Again, how sad that makes me feel. The futility of war, and it still carries on round the globe as we are destined as a race to continue to hate each other for our differences. Strange how often now and in the past religion has been at the root of things, and yet all religions are supposed to teach tolerance and love for your neighbours….

Back to now. I am on the so called Quiet carriage of the train – this relates to the use of phones and ipods, and for once no-one is abusing those regulations. I have traded a gaggle of trainee nurses for a kindergarten – unfortunately it is half term and parents are trying to amuse some very noisy offspring, so no snoozing today!

Seems I am lucky nevertheless as yesterday morning all trains were cancelled courtesy of an overnight storm which deposited trees all over the tracks, and roads of course. 24 hours later you would never know, and I am actually impressed that we can manage that in England – perhaps we are improving!

I spoke too soon. Someone is now on their phone!

Results: Train company 9/10, parenting abilities 2/10, ability to read notices 0/10, trainee nurses 10/10 – noisy but you have to admire them for wanting to do that job.
