They say resolutions are always broken, and mine didnt last long. I was going to wax lyrical during our recent escape to Lanzarote, but then I realised I had agreed to no internet connection and to hand over my phone and ipad to B to avoid temptation. I got to keep the ipad for diary purposes, but no posting. Never mind, I thought, I will do it when I get back. After an 18 hour delay including hotel stopover on the way home, it was straight back into daily life and somehow 3 weeks have gone by. Its corny, but it feels like we never went away.
But we did and it was good. Weather was mixed, overall plenty of sun but always plenty of wind too – I think it died down a bit on only one day. We did a trip out and were told how dry the island is, then of course it rained. Only a bit, but nevertheless it did!
The trip was to Timanfaya – a national park of volcanos, lava and ash fields. It is truly stunning and you can see why it is used a lot as a film location. It is still active too – they demonstrate with hot ash you can hardly hold, setting fire to brush by shoving it a meter down a hole, and then chucking water down a deeper one via a chute which then explodes back with steam. Everyone jumps!
The rest of the time we ate and drank almost constantly. It was fabulous! To be fair a bit of walking went on to try to combat the effects, but the cold wind removed the urge to swim in the sea or the pool.
One walk we did a couple of times took us to the end of the airport runway where you can watch the planes come in and nearly land on your head. Hot Tip – move away when they are taking off: the end of the runway is next to the beach and the backwash stirs up the sand into a mini sandstorm which deposits most of the beach into your hair. Interesting deposits in the bath later as a result.
Anyway, thanks to Horatio, we paid for this trip from the rebate we got last year for all the gas and electric we didnt use at the house while we travelled – now that is a result!
