7-8 April 2012, 112 miles
We woke yesterday morning to the sound of rain drumming on the van roof. Despite that we then attempted to view the allegedly lovely Rose Granite coast, but truth be said the best lumps of granite we saw were in the van park as the rain got worse and we lost the will to carry on. So we headed south.
Then the wind got up and B drove Horatio 100 miles whilst being constantly buffeted – he said it was like trying to control a bull (not sure when he tried that before, but still…)
We made a lunch stop in St. Thegonnec – a small town with a spectacular church. Bizarrely there were daisies growing all over it on every horizontal ledge, right up to the top of the bell tower!
We left there with half a baguette sandwich each in the fridge as we have yet to get a handle on portions over here. Eventually we arrived in Concarneau on the south coast of Brittany near Quimper, which the guide book said had a walled town, but we were too tired to look for it. We got a nice spot in a campsite with a view of some houses and the sea, and a building site with 2 enormous cranes – we know how to pick them!
Dinner in the cafe at the site was a revelation – 3 courses for £12 including fabulous steaks – truly good restaurant quality and not what you expect in a campsite. Nice bottle of Cote de Rhone too!
Today we extracted Kymi from his garage and headed round the coast road to find the walled town. Spectacular!
It’s actually a small walled island, the ramparts were old fortifications and inside are many original and some newer buildings – now all cafes and shops. There appears to be high demand for ice cream and stripy Breton tops here. We went for coffee, moules frites and pizza. The wind is still blowing but the sun is out. We hardly notice the cranes after a glass or two…..
