Inside every older person is a younger one wondering what the hell happened…

What a waste!

And to follow on from the Ian Dury song – I don’t believe it!

If you were in any doubt at all about my age both of these references should help to confirm it.  Mind you, if you get them, then you are too, of a certain period in life….

As to what precipitated these two exclamations, it might – or might not- surprise you to learn that it was a trip to fridge.  I had just whipped up a quick stir fry to take care of 2 rumbling stomachs – as usual at the weekend, we try to survive until the evening on the (late) breakfast alone – and I was in search of a little accompaniment to the food.  Usually this would be a glass of red, but B strangely refused this option, but then dinner was a bit early, even for him.  I don’t like to open a fresh bottle in that (rare) circumstance, but sometimes there is a little bit of blush left in the fridge, so off I went.  Note: at this point I am not sure about this option, something of a mid life memory loss indicator, but that can lead to nice surprises so never mind. No blush (rose if you prefer) but – and this did make me blush – two thirds of a bottle of our best champers in the fridge door, with no cork or teaspoon or anything at all in the neck.  Quel horreur!

Unbelievably we had somehow overlooked our putting the bottle back in the fridge to keep it cold.  OK, so it was bottle number two, but this was Dad’s birthday, which was 12 days ago, so not only did we not finish it then which is unheard of, but had we stayed in to have a take away so it’s not like we ran out of time.  Worse, we have failed to notice our failure for 12 days!

I should note that we have two fridges and this one is supposed to be the booze fridge, which I think is cool, in both senses. It does mean it is generally used less than the other fridge which has the milk and butter in it, but it currently this one has both onions and potatos in the salad drawer, used in most meals I cook.  So, I ask myself , how often did I actually cook a meal in the last 12 days….  er, well, aaah, just 4 times, one of which was early morning (slow cooker) when I am not generally at my most observant.

More signs of impending incapacity.  So, to avoid the aforementioned waste, I am now contributing to this evening’s potential incapacity by consuming said remains prior to heading off to the local hostelry in an attempt to boogie it all back off the waistline to a band called Here, There and Everywhere (or similar).

Actually – and amazingly – there is still a hint of sparkle left, and it tastes remarkably bon.
