Monday 9th July, 167 miles, sunny, cloudy, then rainy
Finally we did have to leave the Lac – but with a promise to ourselves to return. Now it was time to clock up some miles as the aim was to get to the next client – at the far western end of northern Spain – by the end of the week.
We could have made Spain that day, but decided that one more night in France would be good, so we headed towards Biarritz and St. Jean de Luz and it started raining again. B noted that the weather in the area had not changed in 10 years as that’s what it did on his previous motorbike trip when he got to Biarritz. Based on the weather and his experience we were not going into the town anyway.
Based on my research using our camping guides and the satnag, we were not going to St. Jean de Luz either. I picked out the very attractive sounding St. Pee sur Nivelle. Actually there should be an accent over the first e in Pee, but it’s more fun if you ignore that. On the way to Pee (!) we stopped in a small town called Nogaro for lunch on the terrace of a restaurant, located right on a traffic junction which was nevertheless very popular as the lorries thundered by. We had kebabs of duck hearts. Sounds awful but was actually lovely. At least they use everything over here.
St. Pee was similarly on a major road route and we risked ourselves to take a quick look around before staying the night in the local Aire, which was on another lake and so very pleasant. On this lake you could launch yourself off the top of the hill on the opposite side in some sort of sling under a pair of cables and “fly” across to our campervan park. Mmmm, perhaps not. As it was too late to be operating, we were spared the soul searching on that one.
Tuesday 10th July – see next post!
We crossed the border into Spain and a world of near incomprehension!
Au revoir France – until September….
