Back to the Diary of our Honeymoon/work/seeing friends and family trip to the USA last September/October. Following our wonderful week with friends in upstate New York, we had a gap in our itinerary due to a “misunderstanding” with Number 3 Son, such that we had to delay seeing him and think of something else to do before arriving in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
We consulted with our friends and looked at the route, which went via Detroit – so, being petrol heads (how many vehicles?!) we decided the Henry Ford Museum would make a good stopover visit. We booked into a hotel in Dearborn, just up the road, and drove there in our unloved Ford Taurus. The hotel drops you off to avoid parking issues, and we spent a day wandering around looking at cars of all marques, with a spot of lunch at an Airstream Caravan Cafe (of course!). We also went to the Ford F150 pick up truck production line, but no photos allowed.
At the museum the whole history of the Mustang was displayed on a series of boards, with some examples – we decided that the best looking ones are ours – naturally – and the one made famous in Bullit with Steve McQueen – friends have the convertible and saloon versions which are lovely, but the fastback is just beautiful, sadly they didnt have one.
There were so many other cars it was overwhelming. B liked the series of President’s cars, but I found them spooky as most seemed to involve the Presidents being shot.
Here are a few other cars which caught my eye:
And, somewhat bizarrely – a DC3 Dakota – one of my favourite aircraft!
