Pome for a Birthday

In the spirit of this part of the blog, a bit more poetry, not my own, but sent to me for my birthday by a very close friend whom I greatly miss as we are separated by many miles as well as the English Channel. It speaks for itself and to my heart….

POME

Far in the distance a sheep is bleating

Horses snuffle and snort behind the hedge.

Above me the swifts dart and clamour

Gathering ready to make their long journey eastwards.

A lone kestrel surfs the thermals

I am walking alone.

I close my eyes.

The heady perfumes of the honeysuckle assault me as the warmth of the sun bathes my face.

The breeze ripples leaves and ripening wheat And the buzy humming of the bumble bees undertone.

And then I hear the crickets.

And I was back walking the vineyards with you no longer alone.

The memories of the sun, the laughter, the long wine-punctuated days make me smile.

Across the seas we are together again.

I open my eyes and walk on

Carrying you with me

Under the same clear blue sky

Seeing the scabious together again

Feeling the same sun…

…and listening to crickets.
