Side tracked to Switzerland

The sum of all those tunnels in France, Italy and Switzerland was a 2 day journey to Zurich, Switzerland.  Not in the original plan but thats the joy of the motorhome – you can change direction on a whim, or in this case a customer’s whim.

We found a great campsite, just a mile or so out of the city center on the Zurichsee.  I suppose unsurprisingly the most expensive site of the trip at around £35 not including the token you need for a hot shower – SFR2 for 4 minutes.  We had an attack of the Scrooges and showered together the following morning!

We visited the city by jumping on the local bus – even that wasn’t cheap at £5 each for about 2 miles!  The city is beautiful in almost austere way, the overriding colour being the grey stone though many of the buildings carried striking decorative windows and gables.

Then we left in search of somewhere less expensive before the next set of meetings in the Basel area.  On the basis that the Swiss Franc doesn’t help, we crossed the border into Germany – another country we didn’t expect to include on this visit.  After trailing around a series of small villages, farm tracks and single track roads near the Rhine, culminating in being stuck behind a huge coach (how did it get there?) in a tiny backwater, we sometwhat lost faith in our Satnag camperstop/campsite data base.

Finally we stumbled across a camperstop (aire) in Kandern, a small town in the hills a little above the Rhine, heaved a sigh of relief, parked and headed into the local bar.  The bar was called Route 66, all done out with photos and requisite memorabilia though it turned out the owner had never been there, just bought into the life on the road ethos.  Bizarrely, I had only been discussing the road itself with my assistant the day before.  Spooky.
