Wednesday 5th September, 190 miles, sunny and some wind.
Last night B mentioned again that he wanted to go over the bridge designed by Sir Norman Foster – meant to be one of the highest in the world. He thought it was in the Alps, but I had a sneaky feeling it was in the Massif Central, north of Beziers, as I had seen it from a plane once. We texted the Oracle (Dad) and he said it was the Millau Viaduct. Our guidebook was obviously compiled before its completion – no mention at all. But we found it on the map about 2 hours drive north of Beziers on the motorway. It was today, or another time another year, so off we went!
We were both a bit nervous – it was windy, Horatio is high sided and Jeremy Clarkson was supposed to have been scared on it. The signs said it was open – not too windy then – so we went for it. B drove. In the event it was less dramatic to drive over than expected due to the Perspex panels that line it to act as wind breaks. You actually feel quite removed from the jaw dropping views and its hard to get the perspective on the height.
Once across there was a parking area viewpoint so we went there to get a better look. It is justifiably impressive, even on a hazy day like we had.
The only downside was the 10 euro toll – each way! We turned and went back over to head for Montpellier – it was definitely worth it.
